Ravenheart Music: Interviews

Macbeth are an awesome Italian band founded in 1995. I enjoy their style of music, which I admit is right up my alleyway. The interview was a real pleasure too! So here goes! Welcome to....

...MACBETH – (Answers by: Morena)

Italy seems to be producing some awesome bands, and Macbeth is a band I have been into for a while now. Morena, can you give me a little history about the band, and how long has the band been going?
The band was formed in 1995 by Fabrizio, the drummer, after two years Macbeth recorded the first and only demo tape called “Nocturnal Embrace”. The band signed a deal in 1998 with Dragonheart records and the same year Macbeth recorded “Romantic Tragedy’s Crescendo”...the feedback on the first album, was extremely positive with great reviews everywhere.

Well, I joined Macbeth in 2001 when we recorded “Vanitas” that was also very well reviewed and appreciated in Europe, South America, Baltic states and Taiwan too… In 2004 we recorded “Malae Artes” our first record released also in U.S.A. After the release of this album we played all over our country and we reached south America for a tour.

The last record, “Superangelic Hate Bringers”, was released last year and I guess is our best album ever. We promoted the new stuff in different countries and festivals.

Actually we’re working on new stuff we hope to record the next year;)

I myself possibly consider “Superangelic Hate Bringers” as one of my fave albums of yours. Anyway, I am very curious about the band's name. Can you tell me more, and was it deliberate to name it after a Shakespearian play?
The idea was to find a name to explain our music… In the Shakespeare’s Macbeth you can find pieces of poetry and horrible murders. The word Macbeth is like the Chinese Yin-yang, the black and white shapes in a circle that represent interaction of the two energies. And so the same for my band, our sound is melodic and powerful at the same time. Two opposites in one.

I normally get interesting replies to this one. What made you get into the music biz in the first place, and what type of music do you listen to in your spare time?
I love singing, I love music

I played for years in cover bands at the beginning then I wanted to try to improve myself with this band.

I guess a musician must listen to all kinds of good music, anyhow, my favourites: Tori Amos, P.J. Harvey Muse, Placebo, In Flames, and many more…

And for those who haven't heard of Macbeth, can you describe your music to them?
We began as gothic metal band but we guess that now is a restrictive label. Everyone who listens to our music can’t really put us into a category because it’s hard to classify us into a scene.

I don’t like labels…it’s hard to choose a musical genre to explain what MACBETH play.

Our sound is the perfect fusion of the opposites: cruelty and sweetness, melody and violence. Now we’re working trying to explore new sounds...

Can you give me some history regards the music that features on all your records? I have two of those, 'Vanitas' and 'Superangelic hate Bringers', and these are cool releases by the way.
We had an evolution, of course, because that's normal you grow up, you listen to different kinds of music, you have different experiences. But everything comes out naturally and I believe that now we are heavier compared to the music we did in the past. I guess we learned to work in a different way, keeping the songwriting easy but intense. You also clearly see that we matured in the way we write songs... Last album is really easy if compared to old ones that seems more introspective. The music is catchy and direct, lyrics are easy to understand so music is hand in glove with lyrics. The new album shows the evolution of our sound and of our tecnique. We’ve used carefully chosen sounds & voices.

Also, do you have any tracks on any of your recordings that you particularly like, or any that perhaps you now dislike? :)
I love the whole new album and some old tracks as “Miss Murderess”…but is really hard to choose…

Have you or any other members of the band been involved with any other musical projects, that you would care to perhaps let us here at Ravenheart Music know about?
I guess guys get enough out of this band ;) Maybe in the future ‚cause they think is interesting …

I‘m the only one in Macbeth collaborating with other artists during the last two years…

One of that was the charity project Rezophonic featuring many italian artists like: Movida, Bluvertigo, Linea 77, Deasonika, Le Vibrazioni, Extrema, Lacuna Coil , Articolo 31, Negramaro, Verdena, Negrita and many more.

I performed on stage with them, singing a bunch of songs including “Can You Hear me” usually performed by Cristina Scabbia.

The female fronted rock/metal scene here in the UK could be stronger although it is ok and is growing. What are your expectations of the rock/metal scene as a whole in Europe and across the USA?
I think that the explosion of female fronted bands helped us a little though we played this kind of music for years…

Maybe this kind of music will grow everywhere in the future...

I hope so, hence the presence of Ravenheart Music. But as a female in a male-dominated genre, was there ever a problem with you being taken seriously?
Why? In the female fronted bands we are really important, I mean women..

I agree!! Musically and spiritually who/what are your inspirations?
I can be inspired by everything, by movies, soundtracks, books, basically by reflections about everyday life. Bout other musicians I appreciate, as said I love some female singers, playing different kind of music...

Indeed, I already understand that you have already played some gigs here in the UK this year (2008). How did they go, and are there are plans for you to do some further gigs here in 2009, or is it too early to say?
It was the first time we reached Uk and it was a nice tour and we hope to come back the next year! Our management is trying to plan new shows.

And what band if given the chance would you just love to tour with?
I like some bands as: Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy and more…

Excellent choice if I may say so. All I can say is good luck in all what you do, and we at Ravenheart wish the band all the very best. Finally is there anything that you would like to say to anybody across the world via this website?
Thank you very much for the interview and thanx to all our fans! We are nothing without you…

Thanks Morena.
