69 CHAMBERS..'WAR ON THE INSIDE'
(Nightmare Records/SPV) Reviewed 15th June 2009
It's time to rock and Swiss rockers 69 Chambers have a winner here. Fronted by the sexy Nina Tremi (that is her on the cover!), 'War On The Inside' gets underway with the heavy and catchy 'The Day Of The Locust'. The heaviness continues with 'Bloodaxe' while 'Thinking About You' provides quite a poppy and catchy chorus. A fave track of mine on this cd however is 'Ex Nihilo', which starts of with a rather atmospheric and haunting vibe, before the guitars crash in. The second half of the record, although remaining heavy, does slow down a bit, but overall, this album offers up a good dose of modern female fronted hard rock/heavy metal. It is an interesting release and I am hooked! 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MADDER MORTEM..'EIGHT WAYS'
(Peaceville Records) Reviewed 15th June 2009
I work not too far away from Five Ways in Birmingham, Six Ways near Worcester is a 15 min car drive away from where I live. And here we have the latest record by Norway's Madder Mortem titled 'Eight Ways'. For starters, I like the album artwork here, so what awaits us musically inside the pretty package. Well it ain't bad. Peaceville Records who has released this cd are normally associated with heavy doom and gloom music, so I am pleasantly surprised by this release. Kicking off with 'Formaldehyde', this track starts quietly enough and then the metal guitars kick in, and of we go. The album is underway although Agnete Kirkevaag's vocals at times can be an aquired taste. And as another publication stated - "at times sounding like Grace Slick on the heavier tracks". 'The Little Things' keeps the metal vibe going, with the album generally a melodic and at times progressive affair. I quite like third track in 'Armour' which has quite a catchy vibe and will go down well live I am sure, while another fave is 'Get That Monster Out Of Here'. The album also occasionally reminds me of a heavier The Gathering, while occasionally flirting with Within Temptation as well. 'Eight Ways' is a grower, so it will not hit you instantly, but once it clobbers you, it may not let go. Try it! 7.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MOJAVE..'CROW'S FUNERAL'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 7th June 2009
Mojave are from Vancouver and are big faves of ours here at Ravenheart Towers, and this is their second album following on the heels of 'Stories'. Like their debut, this is an album of such beauty, and I can see some of the songs here against a back drop of hills, snow capped mountains and lakes, and the opener 'For A While' is one such song. LJ (also known as Lisa - the vocalist with rockers Damsel Fly) is not only a good friend of mine, but she is an excellent vocalist. The title track follows, and I love the simple nature of this song. 'Save Me' carries on the good work, while 'Escape Plan' sends shivers down my spine as does 'Wake Up', which actually brought a tear to my eye - proves I am only human! 'California' keeps things ticking along quite nicely, while 'Your Silence Betrays You' and 'No Tomorrow' remind me of a stripped back Damsel Fly. 'One Mistake' features Paul Jarvis on lead vocals, while 'Thank You' (that reminded me of 'Let You Go' from the Damsel Fly album), round things off quite nicely. There are some amazing moments chronicled throughout the whole album...love, loss, starting over, suicide, and the struggle to move forward when it seems that everything is trying to hold you back. Admit it, all of us have been there. Okay, it is not hard rock and it sure ain't metal, but it is one of the best accoustic offerings you will hear this year - great violin by the way, so buy it or download it from cdbaby.com. Enough said, 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
VIVEYNNE..'BECOMING JANE DOE'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 2nd June 2009
Viveynne is an awesome band from Canada fronted by the lovely Mikaila (Mikki), and the cd (ep) on offer here features 8 tracks that run in at around 27 minutes in total. This is the perfect way to showcase this young girl's vocals, and believe you me, awesome vocals we have here too. The record gets underway with 'Blood To Bleed' that starts slowly with Mikki's soaring vocals instantly making an impression, and the band then joins in giving the song a bit of uummph!! Next up we have the awesome title track, a haunting song that vocally reminds me of Amy Lee (as do other songs on this release), and an excellent song it is too. This little epic continues with the more upbeat 'This Phobia' and I am speechless at the quality of the music on offer. Other highlights for me are 'Goodbye Good Morning' and 'Come Crawling', but having said this, all the music is of an extremely high quality. I just want to say something here and maybe Mikki is fed up with the reference. But she is only 14 years old, writes all the material herself and plays piano and synths, and her band sound a tight unit. This is an act that I am sure has the ability to take on the heavyweights on mainland Europe where this type of sound is more or less the mainstream. Record labels, check out www.myspace.com/viveynne and then start your orderly queues here - enough said! 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
XANIMA..'INSIDE WARRIOR'
(Lion Music) Reviewed 1st June 2009
Imagine Evanescence mixed with Enigma goes Kate Bush.....enter: X Anima. The band's nucleus is Pelle Händén who handles keyboards, programming, and is the composer - the female voice is provided by Jade Ell, who is also involved with the lyrics, piano and all vocal arrangements. We have here beautiful melodies, perfect grooves and excellent sound design. It's all a creative combination of pop-rock-electronica with subtle doses of symphonica. It's dark, light, fantasy, heaven and hell... and all that makes up 'Inside warrior', Xanima's debut release. 'The Deeds and the Damage' gets proceedings underway, and from this track alone, one can tell that this isn't your traditional rock or metal fare. But so what, I like it! 'Caged' is pretty cool too, while a couple of my faves on the album so happen to be the bouncy 'Born Into This Skin' and the equally bouncy 'The Essence Of Being'. Other cool songs on this record include 'Soaring' and the awesome and atmospheric title track. Lion Music (well done Lars) has hit on a winner here, that exibits crossover potential - even in the UK market. I like this very much and although not traditional rock or metal, for anybody who is open minded with their music, or is most certainly into the above mentioned acts and similar, give it a try, you will not be disappointed. A cool record! 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
TRAIL OF TEARS..'BLOODSTAINED ENDURANCE'
(Napalm Records) Reviewed 14th May 2009
I like Trail of Tears. They have recently had their fair share of problems, but like a phoenix, they have risen from the ashes, with founder member Ronny Thorsen being forced to put a new line up together. Their awesome brand of high octane gothic metal offers male and female vox. Last time out, the femme vocals were provided by Emmanuelle Zolda. This time, we see Cathrine Paulsen taking the lead female vocal role. Indeed, Cathrine is no stranger to Trail of Tears, as she featured on their very first album. This little opus, 'Bloodstained Endurance' unites all the best elements of their past releases, and pushes them to a new level. And the dual vocal attack of Cathrine and Ronny Thorsen sends shivers down my spine. This record is heavy, it has it's fair share of melody, and Ravenheart Music likes it. Another winner from the Napalm stable. Get it when it gets released (29 May EU and 2 June USA) and annoy the neighbours. 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
STREAM OF PASSION.. 'THE FLAME WITHIN'
(Napalm Records) Reviewed 13th May 2009
Originally the brainchild of Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon etc), Stream of Passion are led by Mexican girl Marcela Bovio, and this is their second studio release. And my personal opinion here is that the band have matured enormously since their debut offering in 2005. 'The Flame Within' leaves it's predecessor in the dust. With this release, the band delivers the whole spectrum of human emotion - heavy riffs merging with romantic undertones, at times even sounding dreamy and melancholic. And Marcela's voice - truly magnificent. I liked 'Embrace The Storm' with it's subtle progressive undercurrent, but I like this even better with it's straight forward gothic metal approach. This is a must buy, and Napalm Records provide us with another cool album by a truly remarkable band. 9/10 (Reviewed by Aimee)
THE REASONING..'DARK ANGEL'
(Comet Music) Reviewed 5th May 2009
Dark Angel is the second album from The Reasoning, a ‘prog’ rock band from Wales . I have put inverted commas around ‘prog’ because the tag normally attached to them does not do justice to their music. There are no widdly solos or weird time signatures, but melodic rock songs that should appeal to a very wide audience. Featuring 3 lead singers, the folkish Rachel Cohen (ex Karnataka), Dylan Thompsons’s rock, and Gareth Jones ballad, this just about sums up their range. The album ranges from the gothic rock of ‘Dark Angel’, to the metal of ‘Call ME God’, to the radio friendly ‘Breaking the 4th Wall’. They are also a great live band, very, very entertaining, I’ve rarely heard an audience sing so much! With the right push this band could become massive; they have the look, the songs and the ability 9/10 (Reviewed by Phil Wooldridge)
XYSTUS..'EQUILIBRIO'
(Sensory) Reviewed 27th April 2009
This is a musical by the Dutch power metal band Xystus, available as a studio recorded CD (released end of 2008) and as a separate DVD/live CD of the actual show (just released I believe, their web site is about as clear as mud, the CD didn’t appear to be widely available until long after it was announced on their site). The music can best be decribed as ‘The Black Symphony’ meets Andrew Lloyd Webber. (George Oosthoek crops up as a guest on both!). The vocalists include Simone Simons from the mighty Epica. This is a very enjoyable listen, the band plays second fiddle to the symphony orchestra, so don’t expect much power metal, more of a rock opera. My main criticism is that they don’t tell you what the story is about! If you bought the live DVD then perhaps all will become clear, but if you have only got this CD, you’ll be totally in the dark. After scouring the internet all I can tell you it’s about a battle between good and evil. Xystus also seem to be very reluctant to promote this work outside the Netherlands (I only found out about it from the Epica website), which is a real shame, as fans of Epica, Within Temptation, and rock operas will find a lot to enjoy in this very ambitious project. 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Phil Wooldridge)
STORMGARDE..'THE ANSWER'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 16th April 2009
Melodic female fronted metal from Germany fronted by Sabrina Grochocki, and with similarities to Nightwish as a reference point. Okay, people and critical reviewers will no doubt argue that all this has been done before. Yep it has, but I myself cannot get enough. The title track kicks the record off and the music continues in a similar vein throughout - melodic symphonic metal I would call it. Maybe a little samey at times, but nonetheless, this band are worth checking out for anyone into the genre. Go to www.myspace.com/stormgarde and investigate further! 7.5/10 (Reviewed by Aimee)
THE DIVINE MADNESS..'NEVERWORLD'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 11th April 2009
The Divine Madness fronted by Victoria Mazzè has released a diverse cd of cool, catchy and at times laid back rock music. The record kicks off with the bouncy and catchy 'Alive', which is followed by the slower but equally impressive 'Perfect Methods'. Listening to this cd, and I also found the experience quite laid back on occasion, just listen to 'Villains' and 'Break Apart' as prime examples of awesome balladry. Although having heard of The Divine Madness, this is my first foray into their music. I was not disappointed and I am sure you will not be either. A cool release and a pleasant listening experience - an 8.5/10 as a consequence (Reviewed by Dave)
MANIC MOVEMENT..'DARK GLITTER'
(Shiver Records) Reviewed 11th April 2009
Well, this is a bolt out of the blue. Not a day goes by when something regards our beloved genre catches me by surprise. Indeed, this one nearly sneaked in under my radar, but I caught it just in time. Manic Movement is not a bowel condition, but an awesome band from Belgium. Founder member and composer Olivier started the band in 1993. Since 2006 the band switched to female vocals, creating more accessible songs and expanding its musical spectrum, releasing 'Dark Glitter' earlier this year. The music here ain't bad, ain't bad at all, with rather cool and sweet vocals courtesy of Virginia Fantoni. This is prime time Melodic Gothic Metal and it is right up my street! Haunting, atmospheric and heavy all in the right places, and production is top notch too. Fave tracks - well check out 'Army Of Agony', 'Voices (Why You Can't Sleep At Night)', the up tempo 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Mindstruck' just for starters. There is even a cool cover of a Sting song, 'Russians'. A very good release from a band that is new to me, and this sure is worth checking out for fans of our genre....8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MAGENTA..'ART AND ACCIDENTS'
(All This And Music Too) Reviewed 10th April 2009
Fronted by vocalist Vilde Lockert, MAGENTA was formed in Norway in the summer of 1995 by Anders Odden, whose experience includes stints with bands such as APOPTYGMA BERZERK (one of my faves) and CADAVER, as well as recording for SATYRICON, live guitarist with CELTIC FROST and guesting with MINISTRY. Over the years, the band has released a series of albums and singles, as well as a video with MORTIIS, and the current lineup was completed by guitarist Daniel Hill in 2006. Hill's arrival signalled the start of a new dynamism and creativity for the band, which has culminated in the release of 'Art And Accidents' on the All This And Music Too label. Well, what about the music? I am going to say that this record is awesome by a band whose image I totally adore. Kicking off with 'Darkest Dream' this track will sure send you to heaven, and the equally catchy 'Untouchable' follows. 'To Die For' (featuring Gothminister) is the third track in, and can it honestly get any better? Just check out 'The One' and 'In Your Arms' for the answer, as it does. This whole record is an awesome mix of Electro, New Wave and Gothic Rock - imagine the Human League meeting The Sisters of Mercy in a dimly lit dungeon. This record comes highly recommended from the Ravenheart Music team. I am going to go all the way here...10/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MORNING..'MOMENTS OF TRUTH'
(Renaissance Records) Reviewed 5th March 2009
Morning hail from Holland and again, here we have another nation that consistently produces the goods. 'Moments of Truth' sees a giant leap forward from Morning's last effort 'Hour of Joy'. I suppose one would call 'Moments of Truth' a Bombastic Melodic Progressive Metal Record, and it kicks of with one of my faves on the record, 'Fading Vs Waiting'. 'Killing Truth' keeps up the pace of the opener, with Saskia van Heugten's vocals suiting the style of music very well. Other faves of mine include the heavy 'Death of Hearts' the power ballad 'Ever Unfolding Secret' and the upbeat 'Disorder'. This is an album for lovers of femme metal that like a subtle progressive edge and it is good. It remains to be seen however, as to whether the label will get behind this band. I have my doubts (that is my personal view by the way!). Anyway, do yourself a favour and get it at www.femmemetalstore.net/ 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MALEFICENT..'DEMIZE'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 24th February 2009
Maleficent was formed in 2006. The band is London based fronted by the beautiful and professionally trained ballet dancer Maleficent Martini, with male vox on this record by Mortimer Cain. This release offers us a cool taste of Alternative/Industrial electro rock/metal and I like it. Opener on this 7 track ep, 'New Deadly Tragedy' is a brief intro that leads us into the title track that comes blasting out of your speakers like a turbo charged express train. Great stuff. 'Where The Wild Roses Grow' is another great track, while 'Bleeding Altar' leads us into 'Black Mass Destruction' - this track being one of my faves. If this ep is a taster of what is to come from this band, well I cannot wait. If you like I:Scintilla and maybe even Ayin Aleph, then this is worth checking out. Visit www.myspace.com/maleficentband and place your order. 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SABINAS REX..'A ROCK OPERA'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 24th February 2009
This is an 8 track promotional highlights cd, which although gives a good idea as to what is on offer on 'A Rock Opera', it is difficult to get a handle as to what is going on, as this is not the full album. However, I feel that after listening to this, I would like to get my grubby paws on the full release as and when available. This New York based band is led by project mastermind Vlado Kormos, and this masterpiece that was composed between 2004 and 2008, shares male and female vox (angelic female vocals by Cara Lynn Robinson by the way). It is imperative to know the story of 'A Rock Opera' to be able to sit through the collection of tracks, as each of the singer’s vocal styles does fit with their individual characters quite nicely. The music on offer I would call classical european symphonic orchestral rock/metal, right up my alleyway really, and what I hear on this promo, would also appeal to any AOR fans out there. Taking into account the rather awesome intro (Church organ, synths and the like), I understand that there will be 20 songs on the full release, and the songs on this promo release seem to be the rather more laid back ones. In summary, I like this, so check out www.myspace.com/sabinasrexopera
to find out what it is all about, as I feel this has the makings of a classic. 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MARENNE..'THE PAST PRELUDE'
(Edel Records Finland) Reviewed 18th February 2009
The quality of some of the releases coming my way this year is totally awesome, and it's only February! And guess what - here we have another! Marenne from Finland was formed in 2007. And although 'The Past Prelude' is the debut album for Marenne, their musicians are far from being just beginners. Zachary Hietala and Janne Tolsa come from legendary band TAROT, while Jukka Jylli is also an experienced musician who belonged previously to bands like MANNERHEIM. Added to all this the voice of an angel, Marenne and this band has it made. Every track on this release is a real gem for fans of catchy melodic metal and the 40+ minutes went too quickly! Some upbeat numbers and the odd slower one too, offering up the perfect recipe for fans of our genre. In summary, 'The Past Prelude' is melodic and metallic, with the dark sounds and intense lyrics leading towards light, with Marenne’s beautiful voice remaining in the air long after the music has finished. I like this release, and from a band that has hit me from out of nowhere. Released on Feb 11th, this is great stuff, so track it down and buy it. 9.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MENA BRINNO..'WICKED POLLY'
(Dark Balance Records) Reviewed 17th February 2009
Mena Brinno have been featured at Ravenheart Towers before with their 'Icy Muse' offering (8/10). So what about 'Wicked Polly'. Well I like it. Rather hideously catchy folk metal we have here, and if your feet do not tap to this, then there is something seriously wrong. I am even sure your Grandparents would not find this offensive and would be dancing along too. Opener 'Banks Of The Ohio' sets the scene, while 'Entrapment' carries on the folk/metal vibe. With songs like the interestingly titled 'Wicked Polly' and 'Katie Cruel', I am wondering where song titles like this have come from, but cool tunes nonetheless, and stories being told within the lyrics. Well even though there is a 'Wicked Polly' and a 'Katie Cruel', one thing is for sure, Devilish Dave likes it, and I love Katy Decker's vocals. Catchy and interesting music on offer here, so get your dancing shoes out and start dancing with the elves and fairies. Worth checking out, 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SILENTIUM..'AMORTEAN'
(Dynamic Arts Records) Reviewed 10th February 2009
Slipping quite nicely into the Symphonic Gothic Metal/Progressive genre, here we have a half decent release that has recently found it's way into Ravenheart Towers. Silentium hail from Finland (no surprises there) and can trace their roots back to the 90s, and this I think will be their fifth full release. 2009's 'Amortean' is an awesome slab of plastic that should grace any femme lover's music collection. Uptempo opener 'Leave The Fallen Behind' does exibit some Nightwish influences, but is an awesome openener nonetheless. 'The Messenger' slows it down but at the same time showcases Riina Rinkinen's lovely voice. 'A Knife In The Back' is a great atmospheric track, and yep, I am a sucker for the awesome female voice, and this gal has just that. Other faves on what can best be described as a beautiful record include 'The Fallen Ones With You Tonight' and 'La Fin Du Monde'. Great stuff, and what I want to know is how our Scandinavian friends keep coming up with the goods? Worth checking out!! 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SOLNA..'EURAMERIC'
(Wild Recordz USA) Reviewed 6th February 2009
On January 7th I reviewed an EP by Solna...a project by Zane Petersen (China Blue/Malicious) and fronted by Pamela Moore. This EP being a taster of what is to come (and can be bought from cdbaby.com by the way). I am now very proud to be able to review what is to come! This being the full album (USA version) which will pick up a release Stateside April 23rd, with European and Japanese release dates to be confirmed. Solna not only features the aforementioned Pamela Moore, but also has within it's ranks Alex De Rosso (Dokken) and Rob De Luca (Sebastian Bach). And the whole lot is mixed by Fabrizio Grossi (Starbreaker/Steve Vai), who also took up bass duties on some tracks. And there are other top class musicians featured aswell. The music on offer here is awesome melodic hard rock of an extremely high calibre, with top notch production to boot. Pamela's vocals are totally mind blowing, as is the musicianship in general. I cannot speak highly enough about this release. Check out 'Blinded By The Rain', the hideously catchy 'Where Are You Running', 'Woman In Love' and 'Sent From Heaven' to prove my point. And the ballads..listen to 'Feel Alive', being a duet between Pamela and Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear), 'Light A Candle' and the awesome 'Dreams'. We have melody on this record, heaviness, ballads and guitar solos to get your teeth around. This is a melodic hard rocker's sexy dream, and it has to be a must buy for any fan of melodic hard rock. Okay, it is not released yet, but do not worry, Ravenheart Music will remind you music lovers out there when the release is due. I so happen to like this record if you haven't worked that one out by now. Get the EP from cdbaby to tie you over, while the full album has to be a 10/10! Powerful and stunning!! (Reviewed by Dave).
SIRENIA..'THE 13th FLOOR'
(Nuclear Blast) Reviewed 22nd January 2009
Sirenia pull it off again. Their last effort 'Nine Destinies and a Downfall' picked up a 9.5/10 review here at Ravenheart HQ, being a catchy piece of gothic pop/metal - Goth goes AOR I think I called it. 'The 13th Floor' carries on where 'Nine Destinies' left off. Kicking off with 'The Path to Decay' I know right away that I am going to enjoy this release. Then we have the pop metal sensibilites of 'Lost in Life' followed by the gothic sounding 'The Mind Maelstrom'. Once again, The Sirenian Choir features on this release, and yep before I forget, they have a new vocalist. The angelic Ailyn replacing Monika Pedersen in the vox dept, although their styles are similar. 'The Seventh Summer' continues the good work, being another catchy and somewhat heavy gothy track. 'Beyond Life's Scenery' keeps the momentum going, and I have to say that I cannot criticise this release at all. Other fave tracks are 'The Lucid Door'...damn it, they are all that good. BUT just listen to the track 'Sirens of the Seven Seas'. Cool! Anyway, JUST BUY THE ALBUM! I suppose fans that enjoyed Sirenia's earlier heavier stuff (and I did too by the way) may well still feel a bit chuffed, but I am sure given airplay on UK rock radio, this band could and should break the metal market here. I would like to see the label really get behind them here. Once again the genius who calls himself Morten Veland, contributes the male vox throughout, plus bass, keys and programming, and he produces and engineers this little opus too. It is early in the year...but album of the year...yep, it is already a contender...and it is gonna get it..a 10/10. Great gothic pop/metal with all the heaviness to go with it aswell! Thanks guys, and gal! (Reviewed by Dave)
KATY PERRY..'ONE OF THE BOYS'
(Capitol Records) Reviewed 19th January 2009
I knew little about Katy Perry until she put in a couple of appearances on UK television a few weeks ago. And I tell you what, she ain't bad - the music that is. Mind you, she is okay too, but I digress! 'One of the Boys' is possibly one for the Avril Lavigne or Pink fans, and full of potential hit singles. It's not metal I admit, but it is catchy, Katy does sorta rock, with the music being described (by myself) as playground music, appealing to the kids and teens out there. Anyhow, she has made it onto the Ravenheart Music site, so what about the music on offer. The title track is as catchy as hell, as is most of the stuff on offer here. Check out 'I Kissed A Girl', 'Waking Up In Vegas', 'Hot n Cold' and 'Self Inflicted'. And she can slow it down too with the awesome 'Thinking Of You' and the equally cool 'Lost'. My fellow Ravenheart Trooper Aimee has pulled my leg about reviewing this, but I quite like this release..not bad, not bad at all! 7.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SOLSKUGGA..'GARDENIA'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 9th January 2009
"Enter my garden, where you will find only the truth". Solskugga is a very lovely lass and she hails from Sweden. 'Gardenia' can best be described as ambient electronic rock. And it is pretty cool to my ears. Not the sort of music you head bang too, but certainly the type of music to sit down and have a good chill out. The record kicks off with the cool 'Intuition', while third track in 'Love and Affection' picks up the pace a bit. 'Empty Street' and 'Blind' proves what an awesome voice Sol has. The voice of an angel! I have 145 tracks by Evanesence on my iPod at home, lots of demo stuff etc, and Sol kinda reminds me of very early Amy Lee/Evanescence. There are further tracks that show that this girl has what it takes, including the title track. I understand that Sol has signed a deal with the new US based label Cauldron Soundwerx. With the right promotion, she could do well. Check out her myspace site at www.myspace.com/solskugga and then place an order. 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SOLNA..'SENT FROM HEAVEN'
(Wild Recordz) Reviewed 7th January 2009
World tours with Queensryche and now with "SOLNA", Ms. Pamela Moore has been there!!! 'Sent From Heaven' is a 6-track EP featuring songs that are taken from the soon to be released full album 'Eurameric'. This EP also includes 1 exclusive bonus track, 'I Light A Candle Too', and limited to only 2,000 copies worldwide. And what an amazing 26+ minutes this is, featuring: Mr. Ralf Scheepers (Vocalist with "Primal Fear"), Alex DeRosso (Guitarist for Don Dokken and Kelly Hansen's "Perfect World"), Fabrizio Grossi (International Recording Artist/Tony Harnell's "Starbreaker"/Steve Vai), Eric Ragno (Pink Cream 69's David Readman/Ted Poley), Tim Harris (Malicious) and Zane Petersen (China Blue). 'Sent From Heaven' is the hardest rock that Pamela has ever backed, and this release will leave you wanting more. This is prime Heart meets Ratt, and was mixed by Fabrizio Grossi (known for his works under Europe's Giant "Frontiers Records" label), mastered by Greg Reierson (Powermad) and produced by Zane Petersen. Go to cdbaby.com, and get it. I love it and if this is a taster of what the full cd will sound like, I cannot wait. What a start to 2009!! 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
TEARS OF MAGDALENA..'MYTHS AND LEGENDS'
(Scarlet Records) Reviewed 26th December 2008
Tears Of Magdalena from Finland has given us a little gem here. Fronted on this release by Magdalena Lee, she also plays keys and the violin. So she is obviously a very gifted lass, although I understand that she is no longer the band's vocalist (due to personal issues and disagreements). 'Myths and Legends' however, offers up 8 tracks of catchy gothic metal with growly/extreme vocals by a certain Mr Vasstago, who is also no longer in the band. And it seems that he has been in a little bit of bother with the Finnish Police due to harassments and nasty threats to other members of the band, and is under a restraining order as a consequence. Anyway, with enough to go on here to write a soap opera, what about the music? As I say, this release ain't bad at all, with the opener 'Aurora Borealis' a catchy up tempo number, and there are others where that came from...check out 'Immortal Love', 'In The Silence', 'Nightmare' and 'Your Blood Is My Wine'. This release would go down well with fans of Nightwish and the like, and even with the occasional throaty vox, I do urge any readers to check this one out. Cool production aswell. I would be interested to hear how their next record will pan out with new band members. Meanwhile, buy this one! 8/10 (reviewed by Dave)
OPERATIKA..'THE CALLING'
(Scarlet Records) Reviewed 18th December 2008
Some of us yearn for the Nightwish of old. Ok, I like the current Nightwish. However, the stories of Anette walking of stage in Brazil in tears because of the smokey atmosphere do not quite cut it with me. I am sure Tarja would not have stormed of stage complaining of cigarette smoke in the venue. However, I digress, New Jersey's Operatika are a symphonic metal band in the Nightwish (of old) mold, and I enjoy this offering immensely. And so will any fans of the Tarja era Nightwish. 'The Calling' although taking influences from Nightwish, possibly has more in common with good old power metal a la Stratovarius or Symphony X. Some real cool guitars and keys on this release, with the stunning Slova Popova hitting the nail right on the head regards the vocals. And mentioning the keys, we have a female in charge of the keyboard dept here (Anna Dok), while all bass parts have been handled by Michael LePond from Symphony X. I am not listing any faves here as this record in general is a power/operatic metal lover's sexy dream. Cool! 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MAGICA..'WOLVES & WITCHES'
(AFM Records) Reviewed 13th December 2008
Magica is from Romania and is fronted by the lovely Ana Mladinovici, and they still have the awesomely named 6 Fingers as their keyboard player. I just love that name. Their previous release 'Thereafter' picked up a 7.5/10 here at Ravenheart Towers, and I think 'Wolves and Witches' will do a little better. I quite like this style of melodic metal with angelic femme vocals, and there are some catchy inoffensive songs on offer here. Okay, some people will argue that all this has been done before and continues to be done by bands from our beloved genre, but so what....it's good :) Fave tracks here are the opener, 'Don't Wanna Kill', 'Hold On Tight', the rather good 'Dark Secret' (I just love the catchy chorus) and album closer (and in this case the bonus track) 'In The Depth Of The Lake'. I said that I think this record will do a little better than their previous...yep..8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SKEW SISKIN..'PEACE BREAKER'
(Monongo Music) Reviewed 8th December 2008
"Peace Breaker" by Berlin based high octane rockers Skew Siskin (fronted by Nina C Alice), hammers you in places where you never thought you would ever get hammered, and is a hard rocker's sexy dream! What more can I say. Kicking of with the awesome 'Metal In Your Face', and yep, that sums up this awesome piece of plastic. It is metal in your face. I defy anybody to tell me otherwise. The record features 13 hard hitting, hi energy and melodic songs, with an appearance on guitar from Wolf Hoffman (Accept) and song writing contributions from Lemmy (Motorhead) and Ivan Kral (Iggy Pop and Patti Smith). And if you thought the opener was great, you barely get a chance to recover your breath when 'We're An Institution' blasts out of the speakers. This high octane pace continues throughout the 50+ minutes, with barely time to pause for thought. Get those air guitars out (you will need them), turn up the volume, annoy the neighbours and rock. Aimee, my Ravenheart partner in crime (who arrives back from Australia next weekend) has seen Skew Siskin live in Germany. Her words..."Awesome", which sums up this album! Get it!! 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
WHERE ANGELS FALL..'MARIONETTES'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 4th November 2008
Norwegian band Where Angels Fall (www.myspace.com/whereangelsfall) continue the path with this release, that they led us onto with the Illuminate album. The distinct sound with angelic, melancolic melodies supported by groovy guitar riffs, and elements of electronica is now taken to another level. The band was founded in 2004 and has released an EP (Dies Irae, 2004) and the album, the aforementioned 'Illuminate' (2006). Now the time has come for a new release: 'Marionettes'. And it is not a bad effort either. Indeed, I think 'Marionettes' has a slightly more commercial edge than it's predecessor. The opening salvo of 'Marionettes (Again)' and 'Freeze Me' shows us the sort of direction we are going with this record. The thing is, this sort of music is right up my alleyway, so I must be frank to say it is difficult to be critical. I suppose one could say that this has all been done before, and maybe that is correct, but when it is done this well, who's complaining. Overall, there is some good music on offer here including 'Path of Sorrow', this sounding like early Within Temptation. This sure is a good release for fans of the genre, so check it out. 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SUHGARIM..'BETWEEN LIFE AND DEATH'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 20th October 2008
This independent effort by South Carolina melodic hard rockers Suhgarim is mind blowing...totally mind blowing. And there is something about Trish Fleury's vocals that I find rather captivating. I will not say much about 'Between Life And Death'. But there are some awesome hard rockers here including 'Hate', 'Fall In Line', 'Deliver Me', 'Decisions' and 'Portland', plus guitar solos to die for. There is enough power here to light up the whole of London, and this album is an awesome band effort. A word of advice...surf to cdbaby.com and buy this album NOW. And then turn up the volume and annoy the neighbours. Awesome and I love it!..9/10 (Reviewed by Dave). And just a little footnote to this review. Their previous cd 'When You Bleed' ain't bad either, with some of the tracks being re-worked onto their latest effort. (Reviewed by Dave)
UNSHINE..'THE ENIGMA OF IMMORTALS'
(Low Frequency Records) Reviewed 4th October 2008
This is pagan/druid metal at it's prime. Music that spiritually and carnally marries the world of primeval nature mysticism, with no-compromise stonehard melodic symphonic metal. Despite their short-time existence, Finnish druid metal quintette UNSHINE has hit the metal world like a clang from an iron-age hammer, with their originally blended receipt of metal. A great album featuring tracks that encompass beautiful melodies and well arranged synths. The vocals of Susanna Vesilahti are quite captivating, while the whole album is very addictive. This is an easy to listen too album, while heavy, atmospheric and catchy all at the same time. Just check out the tracks 'The Paradise Lost', 'Forget Me Not' and 'With The Silents Of The Earth' amongst a whole host of other little gems, and then start dancing with the fairies and elves. Awesome stuff 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
WITHIN TEMPTATION..'BLACK SYMPHONY'
(Gun/Roadrunner) Reviewed 3rd October 2008
I am not going to say much as the music should and will do the talking. Within Temptation have released the album of the decade here. And for those that buy the cd/dvd package. The dvd has been filmed with fourteen high definition cameras, while the concert itself features the 60 piece Metropole Orchestra and a 20 voice classical choir. The whole thing is breath taking. Within Temptation are Premier League. Sharon Den Adel is one helluva of a front lady too, and this girl oooozes charm and charisma. I shall make a bold statement here - no band on this planet (male or female) comes anywhere near WT. Within Temptation are in-fact in a league of their own with the competition well out of sight. Enough said..10/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
UNSUN..'THE END OF LIFE'
(Century Media) Reviewed 1st October 2008
Originally formed under the moniker Unseen, this dynamic four piece centred around Polish guitar maestro Mauser (who is also playing in Vader, one of Poland’s renowned metal bands), finally decided that something incorporating day and night, light and darkness would suit them best. A label for their music which is melancholic and a little dark, yet catchy at the same time. Something that would put a name to the bitter-sweet twist of Aya’s highly melodic vocals, topping the driving force of the underlying guitar riffs. This unique mix easily makes UnSun’s debut album 'The End Of Life' one of the most promising releases of the year. Featuring 11 catchy melodic metal tracks, there is not a filler in sight, with Aya's angelic vocals a dream. I am also of the opinion that if given airplay on UK radio (well I can dream!), one or two of the tracks on offer here could cross into the mainstream. Anyway, mainstream or not, I highly recommend checking this out, and being on the Century Media label, it will be easy to track down. Awesome stuff 8.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
JANEY SUMMER..'ALONG THE WAY'
(Independent Release) Reviewed 30th September 2008
I daily go onto cdbaby.com to see what there is kicking around, and all I can say is what a little gem I have stumbled across here. Janey is from Bridgewater here in the UK, about 90 minutes down the motorway from Ravenheart Towers. And this girl serves up a very tasty morsel of melodic hard rock, with a voice to die for. Kicking off with 'Between Two Worlds' with it's near gothy intro, it is obvious from the start that we are onto a winner here, and begs me to ask the question as to why the major record labels seem to keep ignoring good rock/metal talent here in the UK! Second song 'Flame', is another awesome song which again showcases Jamey's amazing vocal style. Other total faves of mine are 'Seeing You', the slower 'Lie Along The Way', 'You Rock (My Chemistry)' and 'Sometimes' - what a way to end an album. These all feature on an album to be perfectly honest that is a rock solid release. Check out Janey's myspace site (www.myspace.com/summerock), and then buy the cd! Super stuff, 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
VENTURIA..'HYBRID'
(Lion Music) Reviewed 7th September 2008
'Hybrid' is the 2nd Release from this awesome band that features the dual vocal attack of New York based Marc Ferreira and VENTURIA's female vocalist, French lass Lydie Robin. Marc Ferreira may well be a name known amongst AOR circles, but he is now well established with Venturia. 'Hybrid' is actually an apt name for this record, as it combines Metal with beautiful clean pop-melodies, technical progressive rock + classical and electronic music. Some awesome metal on this cd, with the opening Salvo of 'Swearing Lies' and 'Be The One', testimony to this. This cd sure is a grower that takes two or three listens, but basically we have an awesome slab of well produced technical metal here. Other faves on this up tempo release include the heavy and melodic 'Pearls Of Dawn', 'Will You Save Me' and 'Why? This Women's Life' (my fave track! Awesome vocals on this one). This is a good release from Lion Music that we have on our hands here, so check it out, live with it for a couple of spins and it will not disappoint! 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SONIC CATHEDRAL..'A WORLD OF SIRENS'
(Sonic Cathedral.com) Reviewed 4th September 2008
This is the first compilation I would have reviewed for Ravenheart Music. 'A World Of Sirens' has been released by Sonic Cathedral. 32 tracks of awesome Femme fronted Rock and Metal spread across 2 cds, including tracks by After Forever, Sylver Mist, Anadies, Epica, La-Ventura, Skeptical Minds and Ayin Aleph. This is a very good buy, and is a good mix of music across the rock/metal genre. Check out www.soniccathedral.com/ and then buy it! 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
PROJECT CREATION..'DAWN OF PYTHER'
(ProgRock Records) Reviewed 4th September 2008
I have just had the honour to review the Factory Of Dreams opus 'Poles'. Now let's review another album from the Project Creation camp. 'Dawn Of Pyther' is another awesome cd from Hugo Flores and co here, featuring male vox by Paulo Pacheco, with Dubai based Zara Quiroga as the female vocalist on this epic release. It is obvious the extremely talented Hugo is a very busy musician aswell. But no matter how busy this awesome guy is, he always has the time to speak with me via email. This is another record that has left me speechless. It is more prog rock than 'Poles', but is very majestic, epic and atmospheric in places. Just check out 'Flying Thoughts' and the heavier 'Growing Feeling' for confirmation of this! This album has everything. Not strictly female fronted as such, but Zara's angelic vocals are captivating when they do appear. We have percussion, woodwind, synths, guitar and instrumental passages amongst other things on this 76+ minute epic release. All I am gonna say is just buy it, and when you have it, listen to it through headphones! Great stuff and I love it!! 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MARKIZE..'TRANSPARENCE'
(Acropole Records) Reviewed 3rd September 2008
What an album this is. Markize hail from France. But that is only half the story. Their singer, Alina Dunaevskaya is Russian, and on this album she sings in French, English and Russian. Ok, I am not very conversant in French or Russian, but if you want my personal opinion, here is a cd that should take Europe and America by storm, no matter what language the songs are sung in. I challenge anybody reading this review to tell me that first track in on the album, 'Mon Ange' is not one of the catchiest tunes you will hear this year, or any year come to think of it! Totally awesome stuff. And if you thought that the opening track is a one off, then track two 'Another Breath' will confirm that we have one helluva album on our hands here. And after hearing the opening two tracks, you will need to catch another breath. There are further standout cuts, including 'Poussieres de Vie', 'In The Obscure' (awesome organ intro), 'Paperdoll', 'Pardonne Moi', 'No More Life' and the title track amongst all the others. And with a sound similar to Evanescence, without cloning them, well Amy Lee had better start looking over her shoulder and begin worrying. The production on Transparence is top drawer stuff, and I am going to suggest that an international label snaps these up very quickly. This band are heading for the top, they have to be! Interesting lyrics, awesome music. A strong contender for album of the year! Now where's my repeat button? 9.5/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
MEMOIRA..S/T
(Nightmare Records USA) Reviewed 31st August 2008
Finland sure produces some awesome bands - now add Memoira to the list. Released on Nightmare Records in the USA, which I believe is Lance King's little baby. And for the uniniated amongst you, Lance King was once in British Power Metal Band 'Balance of Power'. Anyway, back to Memoira, they are known for their strong melancholic melodies and heavy guitar walls. And as a consequence, this self titled release is certainly one for fans of Epica, Kamelot, Nightwish and Within Temptation, and offers some good stuff for the listener. Fronted by Jemina Pitkala, it is difficult to find fault here. Epic guitars, awesome vocals and some great keyboards/piano that all in all typifies the genre. It kicks off with a brief instrumental before 'Experimenters Farewell' comes blasting from the speakers. One of my fave tracks however, 'Shadow Of My Name' shares clean vocal duties with keyboards player Lassi Nuolivaara. This is another record that with the right backing should take our beloved genre by storm. A European release is planned, but if any Europeans reading this cannot wait, it can be bought at CDBaby.com! 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
SAINT LIPS..'LIKE PETALS'
(Renaissance Records) Reviewed 26th August 2008
Here is one helluva album that has crept up on me and caught me by surprise. Saint Lips fronted by Valentina Barletta are from Roma in Italy, and play a kinda new wave/rock/power pop type of music. 10 tracks, 34 mins and not a filler in site. This is cool stuff from this band and is as catchy as hell. Just listen to opener 'Desert Ship' for confirmation of this. And the title track carries on where the opener finished. Other fave tracks of mine on this little opus are 'Sev69' and 'More Fun', excellent stuff! I have listened to this album a fair few times now, and I am having trouble finding fault. This may not be a record for the out and out goth or metal fans out there, but this will appeal to many who enjoy catchy rock music with a summery vibe. Get that sunroof down and turn up the volume. Cool! 9/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
ROTT..'OUT OF TIME'
(Renaissance Records) Reviewed 7th August 2008
ROTT are from Idaho, and are an awesome outfit fronted by Molly Sirenne. Having independently released this little piece of plastic close on a year ago, it has now been re-released by Renaissance Records. The cd features slow and mid paced rockers, coupled with the distinctive and somewhat innocent vocal style of Molly. Couple this with Dan Profitt's crunching guitar riffs, and this is one helluva release. There are eleven superb songs, and I immensely enjoy what I hear, with my fave tracks being 'Eternal', 'Clearly Blind', 'Drowning', 'Just Like You' and the foot tapper 'Out Of Time'. This cd may take two or three plays before it grabs you, but once it does, it will not let go. Nice subtle keys by Carrie too I hasten to add. If you like Lacuna Coil and similar female fronted bands, plus may be Tool aswell, then check this release out. Live with it and it will not disappoint. Rott will also be featured in the latest Fireworks Melodic Rock zine (Aug/Sept issue) here in the UK. A good record!...8/10 (Reviewed by Dave).
TEMUJIN..'1000 TEARS'
(Renaissance Records) Reviewed 7th August 2008
Temujin is a gothic metal band from Australia. Their cd was released independently around a year ago, but has now been re-released on Renaissance Records. The band being founded by Karl Lean, who was with an Aussie band called 'Nothing Sacred'. In 2004 Karl began solo writing of new material. With several arrangements underway, the next step was finding a vocalist with the sound and style to complement the music. A single session with the angelic sounding Kelly was all it took to confirm that something rare was taking shape. The arrival of Kelly instantly transformed the songs under development. Working from a collection of 25 completed arrangements, the final track listing of 13 songs was chosen for the debut CD "1000 Tears". And these atmospheric sounding songs are very good too. It is a real pleasure when something like this arrives at Ravenheart Towers. This band fully deserve your attention. 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave).
THE SHIVER..'INSIDE'
(UK Division/PHD) Reviewed 30th July 2008
Italian band The Shiver was born in November 2004, Three boys, with a girl Faith on voice. From the beginning, The Shiver were well known in the music scene of their city. In 2005 they made the demo 'SHADES CHANGING', 10 tracks of very intense music. The Shiver's music indeed is dark rock with metal waves and a melodic voice. Their debut album proper 'INSIDE' contains 9 new tracks. The sound is essential and powerful, and the songs are various, with metal influences and also ballads. The songs being melodic as well. My faves being 'XXI Century Decay' and 'Edge of Atmosphere'. The Shiver is a young and fresh band, with the intention to make it in the music world, and good luck to them. 'Inside' is an impressive record so go and buy now. It has a UK release so your local cd store should have it or be able to get it! A pleasant surprise. 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
TYSTNADEN..'IN OUR EYE'
(Renaissance Records) Reviewed 20th July 2008
This is Italian band Tystnaden's second offering, 'Sham Of Perfection' their first appearing in 2006. Laura De Luca's voice will captivate fans of the femme genre, while the heaviness of this release will appeal to the more heavier music fans out there. 'In Our Eye' mixes the vocal prowess of Laura with the growls of Lorenzo Frascardli, the growls although apparent are not overdone. Some good melodic metal on offer here with subtle use of keys, and indeed this record is occasionally progressive too. There is some decent stuff here, but my fave tracks currently being the awesome 'Subterranean Gates' the slower ballad type song 'Fragile', 'Greed' and 'Infected'. This is a good release from the Renaissance stable with top notch production by the band themselves. I understand that this cd is available here in Europe only on import from the USA, and yet Europe is where this release would go down a storm. I await to see if it will ever get a European release. Good stuff from a decent band! 8/10 (Reviewed by Dave)
